The origins of this perennial favorite

The Jack in the box is a children’s toy. It looks like a box with a handle, which plays a melody when turned. At some point, the lid of the box suddenly opens and a figure (usually a clown or jester) jumps out. The melody played is often “Pop Goes the Weasel”, with Jack jumping out at the place where the word “pop” occurs in the song. The origin of the toy is unknown … although theories abound
