The birth of Miss Barbara Millicent Roberts in March 1959 caused turmoil in the doll market. Barbie was heavily advertised both on TV and in the holiday catalogs of the era, most notably the Sears WishBook, which featured Barbie prominently. This teenage fashionista made manufacturers realize that their offerings were looking old-fashioned and out of step with the modern shopper.
